WindBorne Systems Raises $37 Million to Build the World’s Weather Intelligence Infrastructure

WindBorne Systems, the weather intelligence company building the world’s largest atmospheric sensing network and the AI models it powers, today announced $37 million in Series B funding, bringing total funding to more than $62 million. The oversubscribed round was co-led by Khosla Ventures and Galvanize, with participation from TransLink Capital, Lux Capital, and existing investors.

The funding comes as demand for more accurate weather intelligence continues to grow across both commercial and public sectors. As climate change increases the frequency and cost of extreme weather, governments and businesses alike are placing greater value on forecasts that enable better decisions before weather becomes risk.

WindBorne is building what it calls a planetary nervous system: a global network of autonomous, long-duration sensing balloons paired with proprietary AI models that continuously improve humanity’s understanding of Earth’s atmosphere. Because the balloons collect new data in places where it wasn’t previously available, WindBorne can provide earlier insight into hurricanes, atmospheric rivers, and other severe weather events before they reach populated areas. The end result of AI models powered by real data is forecasts that are materially more accurate than those available today.

The company has translated that vision into rapid momentum. Over the past twelve months, WindBorne tripled revenue while tripling the size of its global balloon constellation to more than 600 autonomous sensing balloons operating simultaneously. Just two months ago, the company also introduced WeatherMesh-6, now the world’s most accurate weather forecasting model according to publicly available benchmarks.

From Better Observations to Better Decisions

The financing will accelerate both the expansion of WindBorne’s sensing network and the continued development of WeatherMesh, its AI forecasting platform. WeatherMesh-6 currently outperforms both leading AI forecasting systems and traditional physics-based weather models while requiring significantly less computational power to train. The new capital will expand access to compute resources, accelerating the next generation of forecasting models and intelligent weather products built on WindBorne’s proprietary observations.

Trading firms have been among the earliest commercial adopters, recognizing the value of materially more accurate forecasts for weather-sensitive markets. At the same time, demand from government agencies continues to grow for both WindBorne’s observations and forecasting capabilities.

Today, WindBorne’s observations are assimilated into NOAA’s Global Forecast System (GFS), one of the world’s foundational public forecasting systems and the backbone for many consumer weather applications. As its atmospheric sensing network expands, WindBorne aims to build an increasingly complete picture of Earth’s atmosphere—creating the intelligence layer needed to help governments, businesses, and communities navigate an increasingly weather-dependent world.
