NEW YORK, NY — As the New York Knicks sealed their victory on the evening of Saturday, June 13th, the Dawn Eleven Contemporary Art Foundation (DeCA) was already ahead of the celebration. During the late afternoon, DeCA welcomed an intimate gathering of sommeliers, wine collectors, investors, and cultural tastemakers to 1936 Wine and Spirits for an exclusive wine tasting titled “Collecting and Investing in Fine Wine,” which proved to be the city’s most sophisticated pre-game affair.
The event, organized and curated by Xitong (Molly) Zhang, Co-Founder of DeCA, in partnership with Maison Caldwell, seamlessly fused the worlds of fine wine and live music. The evening was designed as a curated progression, alternating between expert-led wine appreciation and live musical intermissions, reflecting the high-end cultural vision that Zhang has established within the New York art and lifestyle industry.
To execute this vision, Zhang collaborated with certified sommelier Joyce Lin to present a curated wine flight featuring selections from some of the world’s most celebrated wine regions. The flight featured the Champagne Vilmart & Cie “Grand Cellier” Premier Cru Brut, a 2017 Patriarche Chassagne-Montrachet Les Vergers Premier Cru, and a 2023 Olivier Leflaive Pommard Epenots Premier Cru. The red flight included the powerful 2020 Ratti Marcenasco Barolo DOCG and a sophisticated 2016 Les Griffons de Pichon Baron Pauillac from Bordeaux. The tasting was further elevated by premium caviar provided by Atlas Caviar, whose selections complemented the wines and enhanced the overall sensory experience.
Between the tasting segments, a live violin concerto performed by TongTong Lei and Hanchi Shi provided a series of musical intermissions. The repertoire featured five distinct works, spanning from the intricate harmonies of J.S. Bach’s Concerto for Two Violins in D Minor and Ignace Joseph Pleyel’s Six Duets for Two Violins, Op. 8, to the soulful strains of Astor Piazzolla’s Oblivion and Libertango. The program also included the cinematic flair of Carlos Gardel’s Por una Cabeza and a spirited rendition of Coldplay’s Viva La Vida.
Throughout the event, Joyce Lin guided guests through the fundamentals of fine wine collecting and investment. Discussions explored current market trends, regional distinctions, and the specific characteristics that contribute to a wine’s long-term value and collectability. Guests compared styles across Champagne, Burgundy, Bordeaux, and Barolo, gaining professional insight into the factors that make certain vintages highly sought-after by global collectors and investors. This educational component encouraged sophisticated dialogue and provided attendees with a deeper understanding of the evolving fine wine market.
What distinguished the event was its ability to bridge multiple cultural worlds. By bringing together fine wine, music, and investment strategy within a thoughtfully curated environment, Zhang demonstrated how educational programming can evolve into a meaningful platform for cultural exchange. Attendees described the experience as both intellectually engaging and “effortlessly elegant,” highlighting a growing demand for curated experiences that combine luxury, learning, and community.
For Xitong (Molly) Zhang, the evening represented another milestone in a career defined by an ability to elevate cultural dialogue through immersive, narrative-driven experiences. By creating these unique intersections, she continues to establish herself as an emerging cultural entrepreneur and community builder within New York’s creative landscape. As the night concluded, the connection between the evening’s two victories—the one on the court and the one in the glass—felt undeniable.
